Postdoctoral research funding from Academy of Finland for Leena Forma

PhD Leena Forma is studying the effects of age and closeness of death on use and costs of hospital and long-term care.

The research council for health in Academy of Finland has awarded for Forma 3-years funding for postdoctoral research. The study is a part of the COCTEL project in the School of Health Sciences and the Gerontology Research Center in University of Tampere.

The study focuses on use and costs of health and social services among old people from 1998 to 2013, when longevity increased and the service structures were remodeled.

Use and costs of services are compared between those who lived their last two years of life and those, who were at the same age, but lived longer.

The first sample includes (almost) all those who died at the age of 70 years or over in Finland from 1998 to 2013, the second includes 4000 people aged 90 years or over in Tampere. Information on care use is obtained from national registers.

The aim of the study is to contribute to the development of services and to promote quality of life in old age.
