Muscle strength and power in old age: special emphasis on lower limb asymmetry, mobility and balance (Asymmetry) IRCTN34271567

The aim is to study the functional consequences of lower limb muscle asymmetry to mobility, balance, falls and fear of falling of older people with hip fracture history. In addition, the effects of a combined strength-power training to lower limb muscle strength, muscle power and asymmetry was investigated. Data was collected during the years 2004-2005 and it consists over 60-year-old community-dwelling men and women (n=78) who had suffered a hip fracture and were operated in Central Finland Central Hospital between the years of 1998 and 2004. Participants without contraindications for strength training were further randomized to three months strength-power training intervention (n=46). Cross-sectional data of age-matched reference group of community-dwelling older people (n=31) without major lower limb injuries or hip or knee replacement surgery within the previous 15 years were also collected.

Study investigated e. g. muscle strength and power, mobility, physical functional capacity, residual pain, balance, physical activity and bone characteristics of older people with hip fracture history. This study increases the knowledge concerning prevention and rehabilitation of mobility disability by physical training/exercise in older high-risk populations.
