Welcome to the Gerontology Research Center GEREC

GEREC is committed to generating knowledge that can help make our longer lives healthier and promote an active and full life at any age.

Life expectancy in Europe is rapidly increasing, and population aging changes our societies in many ways. Scientific research can significantly contribute to reaching the full potential of longer lives. GEREC also aims to help policy makers and service providers meet the challenges of population aging.

It is jointly coordinated by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Tampere and the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä. Research groups based at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyväskylä and Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, University of Tampere, are also included.

The Gerontology Research Center is supported in its work by a Scientific Advisory Board.

GEREC produces new scientific knowledge for the aging society, contributes to academic training and increases expertise in the field of aging.

GEREC is active in international, national and regional aging-related activities and contributes to public debate on the aging society.

GEREC research staff consists of 15 professors and senior researchers, approximately 20 PhD researchers and almost 30 PhD students, see people.
