During this time, women transition from perimenopause to postmenopause and the production of estrogen ceases. Loss of estrogen has an effect on muscles and leads to a decline in muscle mass. Physical activity in all of its forms may help maintain muscle mass in midlife.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already knew that estrogen has a role in the regulation of muscle properties,\u201d says doctoral student Hanna-Kaarina Juppi. \u201cBy following the hormonal status, measuring many aspects of muscles and by taking into consideration the simultaneous chronological aging of women going through menopausal transition, we were able to show that the decrease of muscle mass takes place already in early postmenopause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the current study, muscle size was measured in the perimenopausal state and right after entering postmenopause, when menstruation had permanently stopped. Women were on average 51-and-a-half years old at the beginning of the study and 53 years old at the final measurements, so the average duration of menopausal transition was one-and-a-half years. The time it takes a woman to go through menopause is unique: in this study it varied from less than six months to more than three years. During this time, the decrease in muscle mass was on average one percent.<\/p>\n<p>Juppi continues: \u201cThe observed change does not seem like much, but what is meaningful is that the decline happens in a short period of time and can have an impact on metabolism, as muscles are important regulators of whole-body metabolism.\u201d<br \/>\nPhysical activity was found to be positively associated with the maintenance of muscle mass during the menopausal transition. Women who were more active had higher muscle mass before and after menopause compared to the less active women. It seems that even though menopause alone decreases muscle mass, staying physically active throughout middle age can help women to slow the change.<\/p>\n<p>The current study was conducted in the Gerontology Research Center and Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, and is part of a larger study, Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jyu.fi\/sport\/en\/research\/research-projects\/esmirs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(ERMA)<\/a>, led by Academy Research Fellow Eija Laakkonen. Seuraamalla esivaihdevuosista menopaussiin siirtyvien naisten hormonitoimintaa, mittaamalla eri menetelmi\u00e4 k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en, mit\u00e4 lihaksille tapahtuu, ja huomioimalla analyyseiss\u00e4 kronologinen ik\u00e4\u00e4ntyminen pystyimme osoittamaan lihasmassan v\u00e4hentyv\u00e4n jo varhaisessa menopaussissa, kertoo tohtorikoulutettava <strong>Hanna-Kaarina Juppi<\/strong> Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston liikuntatieteellisest\u00e4 tiedekunnasta.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksessa lihasten koko mitattiin silloin, kun naiset olivat viel\u00e4 esivaihdevuosivaiheessa, ja mahdollisimman pian sen j\u00e4lkeen, kun kuukautiset ovat pysyv\u00e4sti loppuneet eli nainen on siirtynyt menopaussiin. Keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin tutkimuksessa mukana olleet naiset ehtiv\u00e4t ik\u00e4\u00e4nty\u00e4 noin puolitoista vuotta 51,5-vuotiaasta 53-vuotiaaksi. Vaihdevuosien siirtym\u00e4vaihe on kuitenkin yksil\u00f6llinen: toisilla siirtym\u00e4 kesti alle puoli vuotta, toisilla yli kolme vuotta. T\u00e4n\u00e4 aikana lihasmassa v\u00e4heni keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin noin prosentin.\r\n\r\n\u2013 Havaittu muutos ei kuulosta suurelta. Merkityksellist\u00e4 on, ett\u00e4 muutos tapahtuu nopeasti ja voi koko kehon tasolla vaikuttaa haitallisesti aineenvaihduntaan, sill\u00e4 lihakset ovat t\u00e4rke\u00e4 kehon aineenvaihdunnan yll\u00e4pit\u00e4j\u00e4, Juppi tarkentaa.\r\n\r\nTutkimuksessa fyysisen aktiivisuuden havaittiin vaikuttavan positiivisesti lihasmassan s\u00e4ilymiseen my\u00f6s vaihdevuosien aikana. Naisilla, jotka harrastivat enemm\u00e4n liikuntaa tutkimuksen aikana, oli suurempi lihasmassa ennen ja j\u00e4lkeen vaihdevuosien kuin niill\u00e4 naisilla, jotka liikkuivat v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n.
