Notwithstanding, only a minor proportion of adults, including older adults, participate in physical activity at a sufficient level for maintaining or improving their health. This study investigated both crosssectional and longitudinal associations between different types of leisure and physical activities and well-being.<\/p>\n<p>This dissertation is based on data from three research projects: the Finland 2014 \u2013 Consumption and Lifestyle postal survey, conducted with a random sample representative of the Finnish adult population (n=1354); data collected at ages 42 and 50 (n=303) as part of the Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development; and the Minimum Resistance Training Frequency study, which was a randomized controlled trial including a ninemonth supervised resistance training program for older adults aged 65-75 (n=104). Leisure activities and well-being were measured by self-report questionnaires.<\/p>\n<p>The cross-sectional results showed that, in general, leisure activities and leisure time physical activity were related to better current well-being in midlife and older age. The longitudinal results, in turn, showed that higher mental well-being predicted later participation in leisure time physical activity in midlife, not vice versa. The resistance training intervention improved some components of well-being and some exercise-related motivational and volitional characteristics among older adults. Moreover, improvements in these motivational and volitional characteristics predicted later participation in resistance training.<\/p>\n<p>This research indicates that the associations between leisure activities including leisure time physical activity and well-being are complex. Harjoittelusta nauttimista kuvastava sis\u00e4inen motivaatio sek\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4ntynyt usko omiin kykyihin harrastaa liikuntaa ennustivat voimaharjoittelun jatkamista tutkimuksen j\u00e4lkeen.\r\n\r\n- Itselle mieluisen liikuntamuodon l\u00f6yt\u00e4minen ja sopivan tasoinen harjoittelu, joka lis\u00e4\u00e4 itseluottamusta, ovat avainasemassa uuden liikuntaharrastuksen yll\u00e4pit\u00e4misess\u00e4, toteaa Kek\u00e4l\u00e4inen.\r\n\r\nV\u00e4it\u00f6stutkimus koostui nelj\u00e4st\u00e4 osatutkimuksesta, joissa k\u00e4ytettiin kolmea eri aineistoa: Suomi 2014 -Kulutus ja el\u00e4m\u00e4ntapa -postikysely\u00e4, Lapsesta aikuiseksi -pitkitt\u00e4istutkimusta ja Voimaharjoittelukerrat-satunnaistettua vertailukoetta. Suomi 2014 -tutkimuksesta hy\u00f6dynnettiin erityisesti 760:lt\u00e4 50\u221274-vuotiailta ker\u00e4ttyj\u00e4 tietoja. Lapsesta aikuiseksi -tutkimuksesta k\u00e4ytettiin 42- ja 50-vuotiaana ker\u00e4ttyj\u00e4 tietoja, jolloin mukana oli 303 tutkittavaa. Voimaharjoittelukerrat-tutkimukseen osallistui 104 65\u221275-vuotiasta henkil\u00f6\u00e4.\r\n\r\nV\u00e4it\u00f6stutkimusta ovat rahoittaneet Tekes, opetus- ja kulttuuriministeri\u00f6, Suomen kulttuurirahasto ja Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta.\r\n\r\nTiia Kek\u00e4l\u00e4inen kirjoitti ylioppilaaksi Kuopion Klassillisesta lukiosta vuonna 2010 ja valmistui terveystieteiden maisteriksi Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopistosta vuonna 2015.
