Research is motivated by the rapid changes in the population structure and by the increase in longevity. In Finland, the number of people aged 90 or older has doubled in the past 20 years from 22 000 to 55 000 thousand, and by 2040, it will reach 150 000. The Vitality 90+ Study was initiated in 1995 by Antti Hervonen and Marja Jylh\u00e4.<\/p>\n<p><b>Major research themes:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Time trends of health and functioning<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Predictors of longevity<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Quality of life<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Formal and informal care and services<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Old age as an individual experience<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Biological basis of longevity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Data collections:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Mailed surveys for community dwelling individuals aged 90 years and older in 1995, 1996 and 1998, and for all individuals in the age group in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 in the city of Tampere (n=10 830).<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Health examinations including health interview, anthropometric measurements and physical and cognitive performance tests in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2024 and blood samples for biological measurements in 1998, 2000, 2010, 2014 and 2024.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Face-to-face life story interviews have been conducted in 1995, 2012 and 2023.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">National register data on medication, health and social care use and mortality have been linked with the survey data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vitality 90+ is a unique data source consisting of population-based survey data with exceptional high response rates (around 80%), multidisciplinary research approach and covering over 25 years period.<\/p>\n<p>The project improves understanding of the dynamics between longer life expectancy and the development of health and quality of life of the oldest old. Terveystutkimuksessa on tehty muun muassa fyysisen ja kognitiivisen toimintakyvyn testaus sek\u00e4 antropometrisi\u00e4 mittaukset. Vuosina 1995, 2012 ja 2023 tasan 90 vuotiaita on kutsuttu el\u00e4m\u00e4ntarinahaastatteluihin. Haastattelut keskittyv\u00e4t siihen, millaisen el\u00e4m\u00e4n haastateltavat ovat el\u00e4neet ja miten heid\u00e4n arkensa sujuu nyt.\r\n\r\nTutkimusta tehd\u00e4\u00e4n, koska yli 90-vuotiaat ovat nopeiten kasvava ik\u00e4ryhm\u00e4 Suomessa ja heid\u00e4n tilanteestaan tarvitaan lis\u00e4\u00e4 tietoa. In Finland, the number of people aged 90 or older has doubled in the past 20 years from 22 000 to 55 000 thousand, and by 2040, it will reach 150 000. The Vitality 90+ Study was initiated in 1995 by Antti Hervonen and Marja Jylh\u00e4.\r\n\r\n<b>Major research themes:<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Time trends of health and functioning<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Predictors of longevity<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Quality of life<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Formal and informal care and services<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Old age as an individual experience<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Biological basis of longevity<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<b>Data collections:<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Mailed surveys for community dwelling individuals aged 90 years and older in 1995, 1996 and 1998, and for all individuals in the age group in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 in the city of Tampere (n=10 830).<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Health examinations including health interview, anthropometric measurements and physical and cognitive performance tests in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010, 2024 and blood samples for biological measurements in 1998, 2000, 2010, 2014 and 2024.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Face-to-face life story interviews have been conducted in 1995, 2012 and 2023.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">National register data on medication, health and social care use and mortality have been linked with the survey data.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nVitality 90+ is a unique data source consisting of population-based survey data with exceptional high response rates (around 80%), multidisciplinary research approach and covering over 25 years period.\r\n\r\nThe project improves understanding of the dynamics between longer life expectancy and the development of health and quality of life of the oldest old.
