The participants were 217 female twin pairs aged 63-76 years, who have participated in the Finnish Twin Cohort Study since 1975. We have information about external exposures from 35 years back which makes the design very effective for aging research.<\/p>\n<p>The baseline laboratory examinations took place in year 2000-2001 and the first follow-up examinations were conducted in year 2003-2004. The second follow-up round took place in year 2011 as a postal questionnaire. 411 participants took part at the baseline measurements and the postal questionnaire was sent to 381 participants who still were alive.<\/p>\n<p>The examinations included tests on muscle strength and power, antropometry, biochemical indicators, bone mineral density, sensory functions (vision, hearing, vibration sensitivity, balance), psychomotor speed, dual tasks and memory. In addition to coimpairments, we studied genetic factors in the variability of individual impairments. We also studied the genetic mechanisms in functional decline through multivariate genetic modelling. Disabilities were studied using self-reports of difficulties in activities relevant to daily life. The falls surveillance using a calendar method lasted for one year after the baseline investigations. Tutkimuksen aineisto koostui FITSA \u2013tutkimuksen alkumittausten aikaan 63-76-vuotiaista naiskaksosista (103 MZ ja 114 DZ paria), jotka ovat osallistuneet Suomen kaksoskohorttitutkimukseen vuodesta 1975 l\u00e4htien. N\u00e4in ollen k\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4 oli runsaasti elintapa- ja terveystietoja 35 vuoden takaa, mik\u00e4 teki asetelmasta eritt\u00e4in tehokkaan vanhenemisilmi\u00f6iden tutkimisen kannalta.\r\n\r\nFITSAn laboratoriomittaukset toteutettiin Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4n yliopiston Liikunta- ja terveyslaboratoriossa 2000-2001 ja seurantamittaukset talvella 2003-2004. Kolmas tutkimuskierros toteutettiin postikyselyn\u00e4 vuonna 2011. Alkumittauksiin osallistui 434 henkil\u00f6\u00e4 ja vuonna 2011 kutsu kyselytutkimukseen l\u00e4hetettiin 381:lle yh\u00e4 elossa olevalle tutkittavalle. Tutkittavilta mitattiin standardoiduilla menetelmill\u00e4 mm. lihasvoima, kehon koostumus, biokemiallisia indikaattoreita, luun mineraalitiheys, aistitoiminnot (n\u00e4\u00f6n tarkkuus, kuulo, tasapaino, v\u00e4rin\u00e4tuntoherkkyys), psykomotorinen nopeus, k\u00e4velynopeus, dual task -suoriutuvuus ja muisti. Toiminnanvajauksia tutkittiin kysym\u00e4ll\u00e4 koettuja vaikeuksia eri p\u00e4ivitt\u00e4istoimintojen tekemisess\u00e4. Kaatumisia seurattiin kalenterimenetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4 vuoden ajan ensimm\u00e4isen laboratoriok\u00e4ynnin j\u00e4lkeen.
